Memories Of My Time At Boarding School

1. The First Day
I’m kneeling on the wooden floor of The Schoolroom, next to my silver packing trunk.

2. Wakey Wakey
“Fire, there’s a fire” I shout as I sit bolt upright in bed. The loudest fire alarm I have ever heard is ringing and ringing and ringing.

3. Matron
Webb & Dodds, that’s what we call the two Matrons. They remind me of Chaplin’s Stan and Laurel, except that they are not remotely funny.

4. Breakfast
Breakfast, it turns out, is definitely my favourite meal of the day. Plentiful and mostly edible.

5. Walking The Dogs
There is a peculiar post-breakfast ritual at Oakdene; walking the dogs with Havard and Ruddock.

6. Prep
At the end of the school day, I say goodbye to the day girls. They go home to their families and we pile into the dining room for prep.

7. Defiantly Disobedient
There are so many rules. They govern every aspect of my day and night. Some are prohibition rules and some are imperatives or orders.

8. Letter Writing
On Sunday afternoons it's letter writing time. We sit at individual wooden desks in the schoolroom writing home to our parents.

9. The Music Rooms
The music rooms are my little sanctuary. Six or seven small rooms, each with an upright piano and just enough space for the piano stool.

10. Going Into Town
I love going into town. I can’t wait for that moment when we leave the school gates behind and we are free.

11. A Midnight Feast
One night, after lights out, Caz makes a pronouncement. We should raid the larder and take some tuck and have a midnight feast.

12. PE
I absolutely hate PE. PE stands for Physical Education. It should be banned. It is torture.

13. My Guardians
Because Mummy and Daddy live abroad, I have to have guardians. They are officially responsible for me.

14. Needlework
One of my least favourite lessons is Needlework. There are many reasons for this. I shall list them here in order of importance.

15. The Weekly Washing
Our underclothes, nightdresses and mufti. We are responsible for washing and drying all of these on the weekend.

16. Chapel
We go to chapel every day and twice on Sundays.

17. I Need A Bra
I really need a bra. All my friends wear bras. I feel self-conscious dressing in the morning, pulling on my Marks and Spencer’s white vest.

18. History Lessons
Mrs Munro is our History teacher, my history teacher, and history is definitely my favourite subject.

19. Assembly
Every morning we have assembly. The whole school, not just us boarders, day girls too. I suppose its the start of the school day.

20. Daydreaming
I don’t know where I would be without daydreaming. I love daydreaming. I wish daydreaming was a subject at school. I would be star pupil.
